What a Genuine Tantrik Is Like

A practitioner of Tantra is called a Tantrik. The purpose of Tantra is to unite the individual being with the Supreme Soul through disciplined spiritual practice.

Genuine Tantriks strive to achieve union with the Supreme Soul in this very birth through sincere Sadhana and inner purification. Their focus lies in overcoming the 6 enemies of the mind -

  • Kama (desire)

  • Krodha (anger)

  • Lobha (greed)

  • Mada (ego)

  • Moha (attachment), and

  • Matsarya (jealousy)

Rather than seeking wealth, recognition, or the display of supernatural powers, true Tantriks dedicate themselves entirely to inner mastery and the dissolution of ego and duality.

They ultimately awaken to the Divine Presence in all existence and achieve unity with Supreme Consciousness.

A Tantrik in the Present Age

In the present age of Kaliyug, a genuine Tantrik is one who, like a lotus blooming in muddy water, has risen above the impurities of the world. He is not defined by outward appearance, such as matted hair or displays of mystical tricks meant to fulfil worldly desires.

Vulnerable people approach Tantriks seeking relief from life’s difficulties, and dishonest practitioners exploit these vulnerabilities, misusing this sacred tradition for personal and financial gain.

A genuine Tantrik, however, lives very differently. It is often said that a real Tantrik is Vaishnav in society, Shaiv during worship, and Shakt when alone.

In fact, when a true Tantrik sits before you, you may not even realise that they are a Tantrik at all. Because they do not seek to display their identity or powers.

How to Differentiate Between a Genuine Tantrik and a Fake Tantra Guru

The following points can help distinguish a genuine Tantrik practitioner from someone who misuses the name of Tantra for personal gain.

1. Simplicity and Truthfulness

A genuine Tantrik lives a life grounded in truth, compassion, honesty, and simplicity. Their focus remains on spiritual practice and sincere guidance, encouraging steady progress through Sadhana. They lead transparent lives and do not manipulate others.

A fake Tantra Guru, however, may resort to threats, manipulation, or fear to control followers.

2. Deep Knowledge of Tantra and Scriptures

A true Tantrik possesses a deep understanding of mantras, rituals, and Tantric scriptures. Rather than demanding blind faith, they can offer clear and thoughtful explanations of spiritual practices.

In contrast, a fake Guru often lacks genuine knowledge and relies instead on vague claims or fear-based narratives to justify rituals and extract money.

3. Guidance that Inspires Peace, Not Fear

When interacting with a genuine Tantrik, seekers often experience clarity, calmness, and a sense of inner reassurance.

Fake Tantra practitioners, on the other hand, frequently create an atmosphere of fear or superstition in order to persuade people that costly remedies or rituals are necessary.

4. Discipline and Devotion

A real Tantrik lives a life shaped by discipline and devotion. Their daily practices, conduct, and dedication to spiritual principles reflect the authenticity of their path.

External appearances such as matted hair, unusual clothing, intoxication, or dramatic rituals do not define a true Tantrik.

5. Focus on Sadhana, Not Wealth

For a genuine Tantrik, the central focus is Sadhana and spiritual growth, not financial gain. While guidance may sometimes involve traditional offerings, their primary purpose remains the upliftment of the seeker rather than personal profit.

A fake Tantra Guru, on the contrary, prioritises their wealth over their disciples’ spiritual freedom. In fact, they keep their disciples dependent on them to continue accumulating more wealth.

6. Authentic Spiritual Lineage

A true Tantrik typically belongs to a Guru–disciple lineage (Guru–Shishya Parampara). Initiation from a realised teacher ensures that the practices are transmitted with authenticity and purity, preserving the integrity of the tradition.

A self-proclaimed Tantrik without such a verifiable lineage is not considered qualified to guide seekers on the path of Tantra.

Tantra is a spiritual path traditionally attributed to Lord Shiva, designed to guide seekers toward deeper realisation.

Although this path may appear intense or unconventional, it is neither irrational nor chaotic. Tantra is a precise and deeply intelligent spiritual science, aimed at transforming the individual from within.

3 Types of True Tantrik Sadhakas

In Tantric tradition, genuine practitioners are often categorised into 3 types based on the aspirant's spiritual maturity and inner qualifications.

Pashu Bhav

In this stage, the aspirant is still strongly influenced by instinctive or animal-like tendencies. For such seekers, the primary instruction is to avoid temptations as much as possible and focus on disciplined spiritual practices such as Mantra Japa, while maintaining strict observance of purity and self-control.

Vir Bhav

This stage represents a more advanced aspirant. Here, devotion to the Divine begins to surpass the pull of sensory desires. Practitioners are encouraged to live amidst worldly circumstances while maintaining steady awareness of the Divine, ensuring that external distractions do not disturb their inner focus.

Divya Bhav

This is considered the highest state of Sadhana. At this level, the seeker has risen beyond the influence of sense impulses and is deeply absorbed in the longing for God-realisation. The aspirant naturally abides in spiritual awareness, having transcended the disturbances of the mind and senses.
