The Devi Bhagavata Purana is an ancient scripture that chronicles the manifestations and miracles of Adya Shakti, Ma as the Creator, Preserver and Destroyer of the Universe.
The Purana states that Ma Durga, besides Herself in fury at Asura Raktabija’s murderous rampage, transformed into the fearsome form of Ma Kali to destroy him.
Annihilating an entire army of Asuras, the Universe shook and trembled with the force of Her wrath. Eventually, Lord Shiva intervened, laying Himself in Her path of destruction.
When She accidentally stepped on Him, Her tongue fell out in embarrassment and Her rage subsided.
She returned to her benevolent form, recognising Her beloved and ceasing Her destructive dance.
At first glance, the fearsome image of Ma Kali holding a blood-covered cudgel in one of Her 4 hands and a decapitated head in another instils deep fear.
However, while Ma Kali may appear scary, She is still the Cosmic Mother Herself, just in a different, fiercely protective guise - one who destroys not out of vengeance and blood-lust, but out of boundless compassion to free Her children from the shackles of ego and illusion.
The decapitated head represents our ego, and the bloody cudgel represents the knots of ignorance that Ma severs.
Ma Kali is as soft as She is terrifying, as giving as She is unyielding, as compassionate as She is ruthless, and as forgiving to Her children as She is unforgiving to the wicked.
