Shani Jayanti Date and Timing in 2026

Shani Jayanti, also called Shani Amavasya, falls on the same Saturday (Shaniwar) as per both Hindu Panchangs:

  • North Indian Purnimanta Calendar: Amavasya Tithi of Jyeshth Month

  • South Indian Amanta Calendar: Amavasya Tithi of Vaishakh Month

Shani Jayanti 2026: 16-17 May (Sat-Sun)

Amavasya Tithi: 5:11 AM (Sat, 16 May) – 1:30 AM (Sun, 17 May)

Significance and Importance of Shani Jayanti

Shani Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Lord Shani, the Hindu deity of planet Saturn. According to Hindu scriptures, he is the son of Lord Surya (the Sun God) and Chhaya (Shadow). He is designated as ‘Karmaphala Daata’ — the celestial judge who dispenses the fruits of our Karma (both good and bad), which makes him one of the most important planets out of the Navgrahas.

Shani Jayanti is deeply rooted in the concept of justice and austerity, emphasising that Lord Shani is not a malevolent force but a strict teacher who uses challenges to enforce learning, transformation, and humility.

Rituals on this day typically involve visiting shrines like Shani Shingnapur, performing Abhishek with mustard oil, and offering black sesame seeds or blue flowers to obtain Lord Shani’s grace.

Feeding, serving, and donating to the underprivileged are considered the most effective ways to please Shani Dev on this Tithi.

Such rituals are performed especially to reduce the malefic effect of Shani Dosha in one’s horoscope, which is commonly known as “Sade Sati.”

The 7.5-Year Phase of Planet Shani's Sade Sati

In Vedic astrology, Planet Shani’s Sade Sati refers to the approximately 7.5-year period when the planet Saturn transits through the zodiac sign immediately preceding one’s moon sign, the moon sign itself, and the sign immediately following it. As Saturn takes about 2.5 years to traverse a single zodiac sign, the entire journey across these 3 consecutive houses totals 7.5 years.

This period is traditionally viewed with a mix of reverence and trepidation, as it is believed that during Sade Sati, an individual is forced to face the consequences of their past actions, leading to a time of significant pressure, delays, and life-altering challenges designed to foster spiritual growth and discipline.

While often feared as a time of misfortune, the true essence of Sade Sati is transformation through purification. Rather than being a period of "bad luck," it is meant to strip away ego and superficiality, rewarding those who practice patience, hard work, and ethical living with long-term stability and wisdom once the transit concludes.

The Role of Planet Shani in One's Birth Chart

Here are the technical significations and functional attributes of Saturn in a birth chart as per Vedic astrology:

Core Significances (Karakas)

Saturn serves as the primary significator for the following houses, dictating the "weight" and longevity of these life areas:

  • 6th House: Governs debts, diseases, enemies, and selfless service (compulsory labour).

  • 8th House: Governs longevity (Ayush Karaka), chronic struggles, and deep transformations.

  • 10th House: Governs profession, social status, and the results of one's hard work.

  • 12th House: Governs isolation, losses, and the finality of life.

Dignity and Strength

The quality of Shani’s results is dictated by his zodiacal position:

  • Exaltation (Ucha):Libra (0°–20°). Here, Shani is at his most objective, delivering justice and massive administrative success.

  • Debilitation (Neecha):Aries (0°–20°). His restrictive energy is suffocated by Aries' fire, leading to frustration and poorly directed effort.

  • Mooltrikona:Aquarius (0°–20°). This is his most powerful "office" sign for manifesting social change.

  • Own Sign:Capricorn and Aquarius.

Planetary Relationships

Saturn’s behaviour changes depending on which other planets it interacts with:

  • Natural Friends:Mercury (intellect) and Venus (luxury/refinement).

  • Natural Enemies:Sun (ego/authority), Moon (emotions), and Mars (aggression).

  • Neutral:Jupiter (wisdom)

Aspects (Drishti)

  • Saturn casts a full gaze on the 3rd, 7th, and 10th houses from his position, typically bringing restriction or "correction" to those areas.

Why Shani Jayanti 2026 Is Special

While Shani Dev rules the day Shaniwar (i.e. Saturday — the day of Saturn), the Tithi of Shani Jayanti is determined by the lunar calendar. It is observed on the Amavasya (New Moon) of the Hindu month of Jyeshth. Because the lunar cycle doesn’t align with the 7-day week, the festival doesn’t always fall on a Saturday.

When it does, it is considered exceptionally auspicious and is referred to as Shanishchari Amavasya.

In 2026, we are actually seeing one of those rare triple alignments, where Shani Jayanti, the Amavasya Tithi, and Saturday all coincide. This is believed to amplify the spiritual potency of the day significantly. In Shaktism and Tantra, this confluence is also considered exceptionally rare and powerful for the Sadhana of Ma Kali — the Mahavidya linked to the planet Shani (Saturn).

Lord Shani and Ma Kali: A Tantric Connection

The following stories delve into the close relation between Lord Shani and Ma Kali, particularly in Tantric and Shakta traditions.

Story 1: Shani Dev and the Manifestation of Shmashan Kali

According to Tantric lineages, Lord Shani once sought to behold the cosmic form of Adi Shakti but remained distant due to his "Vakra Drishti," a gaze that brings Karmic suffering and destruction of worldly attachments.

He eventually encountered the Divine Mother as Shmashan Kali in a cremation ground, surrounded by ashes and decay. Lord Shani realised that while he governed the reality of Karmic consequences and isolation, this fierce form of the Mother represented the transcendence of that very suffering.

Shani Dev questioned why the Mother Goddess chose such a terrifying form and dwelled among endings. Ma Kali explained that while Lord Shani operates as the "Karmakaraka" within the constraints of time, She is Mahakali, the power existing beyond time (Kaala) itself.

She stated that Lord Shani’s role is to collapse ego-driven structures, whereas Her role is to liberate the soul from the cycle of karmic bondage once ignorance is destroyed through suffering.

The Mother blessed Lord Shani and declared that worshipping Her on a Saturday Amavasya provides devotees with the spiritual strength to endure Saturn’s trials.

In Tantric tradition, this relationship is viewed as a partnership of spiritual evolution.

Lord Shani’s influence is believed to empty the human vessel of ego and pride, allowing Ma Kali to fill that void with divine consciousness and fearlessness.

Story 2: King Vikramaditya’s Surrender and Transformation

According to Shakta retellings, King Vikramaditya faced a period of extreme hardship after undervaluing Lord Shani’s importance. Saturn initiated a series of karmic trials that stripped the king of his wealth, kingdom, and physical health, reducing the once-mighty emperor to a wandering beggar.

This period of devastation was designed to dismantle the king’s pride and force a confrontation with the impermanent nature of worldly power.

At the peak of his suffering on a dark Amavasya night, Vikramaditya arrived at a cremation ground where devotees were worshipping Ma Kali. Exhausted and humbled by Saturn's influence, he abandoned his prayers for worldly restoration and practised complete surrender.

During this midnight meditation, Ma Kali appeared and revealed that Lord Shani was not an enemy, but a purifier who had successfully destroyed the king’s arrogance and illusion of authority and control.

The Mother taught that Shani Dev breaks the "throne of ego" so that She may free the soul dwelling within. Once Vikramaditya accepted his karma with humility, his prosperity and honour were restored, though he remained spiritually detached.

Symbolically, this story illustrates that Shani Dev removes pride and worldly illusions, while Ma Kali reveals the eternal truth that emerges after the ego has collapsed.

Celebrate Shani Jayanti on Tantra Sadhana App

The Tantra Sadhana app is a virtual medium to worship the Das Mahavidyas (10 Wisdom Goddesses of Tantra) through the path of Divyachar, where all worship is performed mentally, or in this case, assisted by rich 3D graphics for greater accessibility and immersiveness.

The app journey begins with the Sadhak entering Ma Kali’s world and progressively awakening Her through Mantra Jap, Yagna, and Sadhana over a specified number of days.

Then the Sadhak progressively unlocks and completes the worlds of the subsequent Mahavidyas, ending at Ma Kamalatmika’s.

Despite not involving any physical apparatus or ingredients for offerings, this method of worship (Divyachar) is considered the most sophisticated by scriptures and renowned sages, as it demands complete mental immersion without distractions.

The app, created by Himalayan monk Om Swami, makes Tantric Das Mahavidya worship accessible, cost-free, and ad-free for all spiritual seekers who wish to walk the path of Tantra.

All the awakened chants in all the rituals are heard in Om Swami’s recorded voice while the user performs them. And Swamiji has completed and mastered all these Sadhanas Himself, making His guidance in the app incredibly effective in invoking the Grace of the Divine Mother in Her 10 Tantric forms.

Ma Kali’s Secret Shrine on Shani Amavasya

The Secret Shrine is a special world in addition to the 10 Mahavidya worlds in the app. It opens only on spiritually significant days, such as Navratris and Mahavidya Jayantis, offering all users the opportunity to worship the Mahavidya connected to the special occasion through Her Dhyan Shlok and Tantric Mantra — irrespective of whether the user has unlocked Her world in their main app journey.

On the exceptionally potent Tithi of Shani Jayanti 2026 that coincides with a Shaniwar, the Secret Shrine of Ma Kali would be made accessible to all app users for a period of 29 hours.

Sadhaks would be able to recite Goddess Kali’s Dhyan Shlok and 22-lettered Dakshin Kali Mantra with Bijaksharas for as many repetitions as they want.

As Om Swami’s guidance is coded into the app, no personal Guru is required for users.

The Shrine will be open between:

12:00 AM (Sat, 16 May) – 5:00 AM (Sun, 17 May)

This is your golden chance to experience Ma Kali’s Presence and move into the full journey of Das Mahavidya worship.

Shani Jayanti is considered exceptionally powerful because it marks the birth of Lord Shani, the celestial judge whose influence determines a person's karmic rewards and punishments. Devotees believe that performing sincere rituals on this day can appease his stern energy, mitigating the hardships of Sade Sati and clearing the path for spiritual growth.

Is Shani Jayanti important only for those who have Shani Dosha?

No. While Shani Jayanti is a vital day for those mitigating Shani Dosha or Sade Sati, it holds spiritual significance for everyone, because rituals performed on this day act as a strategic safeguard against unforeseen professional setbacks, legal complications, or financial instability.

Why do Hindus offer sesame oil to Lord Shani on Shani Jayanti?

The tradition of offering sesame oil to Lord Shani stems from the Ramayana, where Lord Hanuman used it to heal Shani Dev’s injuries, leading to a divine promise that such offerings would soothe his temperament and protect devotees from his harsh gaze. By performing this ritual, you effectively neutralise the "heat" of your past karma and secure a smoother path free from the friction of sudden financial or physical setbacks.
