About Ma Chinnamasta

Ma Chinnamasta is the sixth of the Das Mahavidyas and belongs to the Kali Kula sub-tradition. She is also known as Prachanda Chandika and regarded as the Shakti of Kabandha Shiv — a rare Tantric form of Lord Shiv, in which He is depicted without a head (Kabandha means a headless trunk or torso). Symbolically, this form represents consciousness beyond the mind, identity, and ego.

Her iconography is among the most distinct of the Mahavidyas. She is self-decapitated, holding Her own head, with 3 streams of blood flowing from Her neck. This imagery is not symbolic of destruction but of self-sacrifice.

Ma Chinnamasta, out of compassion and selflessness, decapitates Herself to feed Her hungry attendants, along with Herself. The 3 streams of blood flowing out of Her neck represent the Pran Shakti (life force) travelling through the 3 Nadis (energy channels) — Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna — to sustain life.

They also represent the Kundalini energy, breaking through the following 3 Granthis (energy knots) to reach the Sahasrar (Crown) Chakra:

  • Brahma Granthi, associated with the Muladhar and Svadhishthan Chakras (Root and Sacral Chakras), represents survival and fear.

  • Vishnu Granthi, associated with the Manipur and Anahat Chakras (Solar Plexus and Heart Chakras), represents emotional attachments.

  • Rudra Granthi, associated with the Vishuddhi and Ajna Chakras (Throat and Third Eye Chakras), represents the ego.

This is the energetic process that leads to Yog (divine union of Shakti with Shiv), commonly known as liberation.

Ma Chinnamasta's iconography also shows Her standing on a copulating couple, Kamdev and Rati, the Hindu deities of desire, love, and attraction. This symbolism shows that Ma is beyond the desires that create bondage and is inspiring Her devotees to transcend them too, for liberation.

Ma's worship has historically been associated with specific practitioner groups such as Tantrics, Yogis, Aghoris, and Nath Panthis, including figures like Gorakhnath.

However, householders may also approach Her for protection and rapid inner transformation. Her Sadhana brings up unresolved attachments and bonds, so that the seeker can become free of them.

The Story of Her Emergence

Her manifestation is described in Tantric texts such as the Pranatoshini Tantra and Shaktisamgama Tantra.

According to the narrative, Ma Parvati, accompanied by Her attendants, Dakini and Varnini, went to bathe in the Mandakini River. After the bath, Her companions expressed intense hunger and repeatedly asked for food even when Ma gently asked them to wait.

So, in Her boundless compassion, Ma severed Her own head, and from Her neck emerged 3 streams of blood.

  • 2 streams nourished Her companions

  • The third was consumed by Her own severed head

This act transformed Her into Devi Chinnamasta. It embodied Her self-sacrifice and immense nourishing energy.

The Significance of Chinnamasta Prakatya Divas

Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi, the Tithi of Chinnamasta Prakatya Divas or Chinnamasta Jayanti, is associated with intense and transformative energies.

The significance of this day is both practical and philosophical. At a practical level, Her worship is believed to provide:

  • Protection from sudden crises and calamities

  • Detachment from emotional and mental bondage

  • Progress toward higher states of awareness

At a deeper level, the day represents the principle of cutting through the ego and false identity. Her imagery conveys that transformation requires confronting fundamental fears—regarding loss, control, and identity.

This makes the Tithi especially relevant for seekers seeking inner discipline and radical clarity, not just external outcomes.

Furthermore, in the Pranatoshini Tantra, She is described as the one who grants both enjoyment and liberation, embodying the paradox of life energy:

bhogaṃ mokṣaṃ ca yā devī dadāti sādhakāya vai ।
sā chinnamastā vijñeyā parama-tattva-svarūpiṇī ॥

"She who grants both worldly enjoyment and liberation to the practitioner is known as Chinnamasta, the embodiment of the Supreme Reality."

Worshipping Her in the Secret Shrine of Tantra Sadhana App

Tantra Sadhana App by Himalayan monk, Om Swami, offers a free and ad-free virtual journey to awaken each of the Das Mahavidyas through the Tantric path of Divyachar (mental worship).

Each Mahavidya, starting from Ma Kali and ending with Ma Kamalatmika, has a separate 3D world, which a Sadhak can navigate to unlock and perform Her Tantric Mantra Jap, Yagna and special Tantra Sadhana for specified periods.

The seeker is guided, step-by-step, through each ritual. Consecrated and awakened by Om Swami, the mantras are directly from the scriptural texts.

This makes the app a perfect gateway for not just the experienced initiates but the beginner-level seekers who don’t have a personal Guru but wish to worship the Das Mahavidyas of Tantra.

Secret Shrine

On Chinnamasta Prakatya Divas, the Secret Shrine on the app offers a simplified way to approach the worship of Ma Chinnamasta — for beginner-level and experienced Sadhaks alike.

On this day, you can enter the Shrine to chant Her awakened Dhyan Shlok and Tantric Mantra with Bijaksharas, even if you haven’t unlocked Her main world in the Mahavidya realm yet.

Adhering to the principles of Divyachar (the Tantric path of mental worship), the app allows practitioners to engage with Her sadhana without any traditional infrastructure or a personal Guru.

Make the most of this opportunity to achieve radical self-transformation through selfless action, detachment, and control over your life force itself.
