About Ma Matangi

Ma Matangi is the ninth of the Das Mahavidyas. She is none other than Ma Saraswati, prayed to in Tantra as Ma Matangi.

Both govern formal knowledge, learning, arts, and structured expression. Ma Matangi also presides over spontaneous expression - the highest creativity that flows through speech, music, and the arts.

She is associated with Vak (speech), sound, and articulation, and is especially revered by those seeking mastery in communication and the arts.

Her role within Tantra is precise — She governs how inner intelligence translates into outward expression. This includes not just what one knows, but how effectively one can convey it. Because of this, she is strongly linked to Vak Siddhi, the ability to speak with clarity, authority, and impact.

The Purashcharyarnava says:

akshavakshye mahadevim matangi sarvasiddhidam।
asyah sevanamatrena vak-siddhim labhate dhrum॥

“I shall now speak of the Great Goddess Matangi, the bestower of all perfections.
By merely serving (worshipping) Her, one certainly attains perfection of speech.”

The Story of Her Emergence

Ma Matangi is believed to have manifested on Shukla Paksha Tritiya in the month of Vaishakh — an occasion observed annually as Matangi Jayanti or Matangi Prakatya Divas.

Her origin is described through multiple Tantric narratives rather than a single linear story. One stream connects Her emergence to the intense penance of Sage Matanga, where Divine energy manifested as his daughter, Matangi. Another describes Her arising from the Uchchisht (food remnants) of Shiv and Shakti, symbolising the presence of Divinity even in what is socially or ritually discarded.

Some traditions describe Her as Uchchisht Chandalini, where Chandalini means a female outcaste in Sanskrit. This emphasises Her role in transcending rigid boundaries of social norms and purity and impurity.

In every story of Her origin, Ma’s underlying essence is the same - She is the wisdom and power that exists outside conventional society.

The Significance of Matangi Prakatya Divas

Matangi Prakatya Divas or Matangi Jayanti is a particularly relevant and spiritually potent day for anyone, especially devotees of the Divine Mother, working with communication, learning, creativity, or expressive intelligence.
